Allen served an apprenticeship to the late Carl E. Reiter as a violinmaker from 1980 to 1983 and made his first two violins under his supervision. In 1995 he designed the six-string Violira and built the first prototype, which he is still playing. In 2014 he was commissioned to make one for the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. The instrument is now in their permanent collection and on display. He is currently building a five-string "contralto violin," another original design.
